Buying guide: how to choose a fast electric bike in 2026
You compare a fast electric bike on more than its top speed. Motor, battery, brakes and weight decide how the bike feels day to day – and what it can handle when the speed is high. All figures below are the manufacturers' specifications from the product pages. To see every type of e-bike, browse the full range of electric bikes.
45 km/h electric bike or faster – which is the fastest electric bike?
28 of the models have a stated top speed of 45 km/h. 12 models state 50–51 km/h, including the Duotts S26, KOOLUX X7 and RATTAN LM Ultra. According to the manufacturers, the fastest are the ZONVEER ZX3 and LOOKROAD L26 at 60 km/h, followed by the Duotts F26, Duotts N26, Duotts E26 and LOOKROAD L20 at 55 km/h. Top speed isn't everything, though: torque – 34–120 Nm in this collection – decides how quickly the bike gets up to speed and how it copes with hills.
Motor power – 500 W, 750 W, 1,000 W or 1,500 W electric bike
Motor power is given as two figures: rated power, which the motor can deliver continuously, and peak power, which it can deliver for shorter periods. 750 W rated power is the most common and is found on 18 models. Seven models have 500 W, for example the KOOLUX X2 and VARUN M27-1 Pro, while eleven have 1,000–1,500 W, such as the Wheely XAL270, LOOKROAD L20 and ZONVEER ZX3 with 2,800 W peak power. The Duotts F26, S26 and N26 have dual 750 W motors, and the APEFOX RH20 has two 500 W motors. Seven models state only 250 W rated power but up to 1,300 W peak power, among them the TST R002, TST R7 and HOVSCO HovBeta.
Battery and range on a powerful electric bike
High speed uses energy, so the battery matters more on a powerful electric bike than on a regular one. Compare in watt-hours, volts times amp-hours: the collection ranges from 48 V 12 Ah (576 Wh) to 48 V 65 Ah (3,120 Wh) on the KOOLUX X8, which also states the longest range, 220 km. Stated range in the collection is 40–220 km, measured in favourable conditions. If you often ride close to top speed, the distance will be shorter. All 46 models have a removable battery, so you can charge indoors. If distance is your priority, there are more models among our long range electric bikes.
Brakes, tyres and suspension on fast e-bikes
Every model has two brakes, 45 of them disc brakes, and 29 have hydraulic brakes according to the product data. The HX Q5S, Hidoes B9 and HOVSCO HovCart also have E-ABS. 22 models have suspension front and rear; the rest have a suspension fork. 35 models have off-road tyres, often 20 × 4.0 inches wide, which give grip and comfort but roll heavier than narrow tyres. Also check the maximum load: it varies from 90 kg to 204 kg between models.
Choose a fast electric bike for the way you ride
- Commuting: the lightest fast e-bikes have 26–29-inch wheels and weigh 23.6–28.6 kg, for example the VARUN M27-1 Pro, Duotts C29-S and Wheely XAL270. Looking for a 45 km/h men's electric bike? You'll find more models among our men's electric bikes.
- Off-road, gravel and snow: models with 20 × 4.0-inch tyres and front and rear suspension, such as the Duotts S26, LOOKROAD L20 and ZONVEER M20. See also our fat bikes.
- Transport and storage: ten models fold, including the ENGWE ENGINE Pro 2.0, LOOKROAD L26 and KOOLUX RK10.
- Without pedalling: for 20 models the product data lists a pure electric mode with a throttle. You'll find more among our throttle electric bikes.

Checklist – fast electric bike
Note the same details for the models you're comparing:
- Top speed and torque
- Rated and peak power
- Battery watt-hours and stated range
- Weight, wheel size and maximum load
- Brakes and suspension
- Where you will ride
Under EU Regulation 168/2013, an e-bike with more than 250 W rated power or motor assistance above 25 km/h is not a bicycle but an L-category vehicle such as a moped, which in most countries needs type approval, registration and insurance for public roads – see the regulation on EUR-Lex and your national authority; otherwise these models are intended for private or enclosed land. Our best-selling models are on the best electric bikes page.
Frequently asked questions
How fast is a fast electric bike?
In this collection the manufacturers state a top speed of 45–60 km/h. 28 models are rated at 45 km/h and 18 at 50–60 km/h. How quickly the bike gets up to speed also depends on torque, which here is 34–120 Nm.
How much motor power does a fast electric bike need?
Look at both rated and peak power. 500–750 W rated power is enough for most fast e-bikes in the collection, while 1,000–1,500 W and dual motors give more power on hills and with heavy loads.
How far does a fast electric bike go on one charge?
The manufacturers state 40–220 km. The figure is measured in favourable conditions, and if you often ride at high speed the range will be shorter. Compare the battery's watt-hours, which here are about 580–3,100 Wh.
Which fast electric bike is the lightest?
The lightest have 26–29-inch wheels and weigh 23.6–28.6 kg, for example the VARUN M27-1 Pro and Duotts C29-S. The heaviest, with large batteries or dual motors, weigh around 40–59 kg.
Can you ride a fast electric bike on public roads?
Not as a regular bicycle. Across the EU, an e-bike with more than 250 W rated power or assistance above 25 km/h counts as a motor vehicle such as a moped, which needs type approval, registration and insurance for public roads. The models in this collection are intended for private or enclosed land.
