Choosing the right iScooter electric scooter – a guide to the series and models
iScooter's model names say little about the format – the i, W, iX, F, Y and DX5 series overlap in power but differ sharply in wheel size, weight and saddle. The guide below walks through the series, interprets the manufacturer's figures and sorts out what actually applies in Europe. The series – from i9M to DX5 Max
The entry-level i9M (13.1 kg, 500 W, 25 km) and i9 Max (14.7 kg, honeycomb tyres, 40 km) are iScooter's lightest and the easiest to carry up stairs. The W series covers everything from the W7 with 350 W and 8.5-inch wheels, via the W6 with puncture-resistant tyres, to the W10 with 1,200 W, IPX6 and 60 km of stated range. The iX series is the brand's off-road-oriented stand-up models: the iX3 and iX4 with 800 W, the iX5S with 1,000 W and 65 km, and the dual-motor iX7 Pro (2 × 1,000 W, 80 km) and iX8 (2 × 1,200 W, hydraulic disc brakes).
The saddle models F2, F3 and i12 are compact city vehicles with somewhere to sit, while the F7 has 16-inch wheels, front suspension and a removable battery. At the top are the Y16 with 14-inch wheels, a saddle and 100 km of stated range, the dual-motor W12 (2 × 1,500 W, 70 km/h unlocked) and the electric dirt scooters Y18, DX5, DX5 Pro and DX5 Max on 15–17-inch wheels. Range and battery on an iScooter electric scooter
The manufacturer's range runs from 25 km for the i9M (42 V 7.5 Ah) to 100 km for the Y16 and DX5 Max (48–52 V 20 Ah) and the W12 with 52 V 25 Ah, about 1,300 Wh. Expect real-world range to land at 60–75 percent of the stated figure – rider weight, speed, cold, headwind and hills all bring it down. Battery energy is the best guide: models around 480 Wh (iF1, W9 Air, iX3) manage 25–35 km of mixed riding, 720 Wh (W10, iX4, iX5S, iX7 Pro, i10 Pro) about 35–60 km, and 960 Wh or more (Y16, Y18, iX8, DX5 series) is enough for the really long trips. Charging takes 4–6 hours for the i9 Max and up to 9–10 hours for the biggest batteries in the Y18 and DX5 Max. Do compare with other long-range electric scooters. Motor, hills and weight
Rated motor output runs from 350 W in the W7 to 2,000 W in the Y18, DX5 Pro and DX5 Max, and with dual motors the W12 reaches a total of 3,000 W. Power decides how a model takes hills: the entry-level models are rated for 15–20-degree gradients, while the W9, W10, W12, iX4, iX5S, iX7 Pro and iX8 are rated for 25 degrees. Weight follows performance – the i9M weighs 13.1 kg and the W6 15 kg, the mid-range iX3 to iX5S sits at 22–28 kg and the electric dirt scooters at 46–56 kg. Recommended maximum load is 100 kg for the W7, 120 kg for most city models and 150 kg for the iX4, iX5S, iX7 Pro, iX8, W10, W12 and the entire DX5 series.
Comfort on an iScooter electric scooter – tyres, suspension and brakes
Most models have both front and rear suspension, the F7 has front suspension, and only the W6, F2, F3 and i9M have no damping at all. Wheels run from 8.5 inches on the W7 to 17 inches on the DX5 Pro and DX5 Max; 10-inch pneumatic tyres are standard in the mid-range, the i9 Max has puncture-proof honeycomb tyres and the W6 puncture-resistant tyres. The brakes follow the performance: the entry-level models combine a disc brake with electronic E-ABS, the iX and W series have dual disc brakes with E-ABS, and the DX5 series, F7 and iX8 hydraulic disc brakes. Several models have a saddle, many have indicators and most have an app for locking the vehicle, checking battery status and switching riding mode. Water resistance is IP54 or IPX4 on most, IPX5 on the iF1 and IPX6 on the W10 – light rain is fine, pressure washing is not. iScooter electric scooter and the rules in Europe
Here it is important to be clear: no iScooter model in the range is bicycle class. In most EU countries an e-scooter counts as a bicycle only if it is limited to 20–25 km/h and, usually, 250 W of rated motor output. It may then use the cycle path with one rider at a time, while helmet and minimum-age rules vary from country to country. The least powerful iScooter model, the W7, has 350 W, and stated top speed runs from 25 km/h (i12) to 70 km/h (W12 and DX5 Max). Almost every model ships with a 25 km/h speed limiter, but the limiter does not change the classification: a model with more than 250 W is formally treated as a moped in most countries and, without national registration, insurance and the required licence, may only be ridden on enclosed private land.
