Choosing the right electric scooter lights – guide
The right lighting means you see far enough for your speed and that others see you from every direction. Start with a front light and a red rear light, then add indicators or side lighting as needed.
Sub-types of electric scooter lights and bicycle lights
The Extreme Edition headlight delivers up to 6000 lm, lights 200–500 metres, has 8000 mAh for up to 12 hours, an aluminium housing and IPX5. The Premium Edition headlight is the city choice with 300 lm, 200 metres of beam and 5 hours of battery life. The Classic Edition headlight runs on AAA batteries, is waterproof and fits every Xiaomi model. The front and rear bicycle light kit gives 200 lm at the front and 50 lm at the rear with USB-C charging and silicone mounts.
At the rear you choose between the Smart rear light with remote control with a light sensor and IPX6, and the Smart rear light with laser, which draws two laser lines on the tarmac and fits seatposts of 20–36 mm. For visibility from the side there is the 15 lm rear tyre LED light and the Smart LED bicycle wheel light for the spokes. Signalling is handled by the universal indicator system for 12–72 V, the Smart rubber grips with indicators and the Smart rubber grips with indicators Plus with remote control, while the adjustable rear indicator and rear light bracket for Xiaomi is a bracket without a light for the M365, M365 Pro 2 and Mi 4.
How to choose electric scooter lights – lumens, IP rating and battery
In a lit urban environment 200–300 lm is enough, while an unlit country road at 20 km/h calls for considerably more – there the Extreme Edition with 6000 lm is the right choice. Rear lights and wheel LEDs sit around 15–50 lm because they are meant to be seen, not to light the road. The IP rating shows how well the light copes with water: IPX5 and IPX6 handle rain and splashes, and the IP65 on the indicator system also protects against dust. Five products charge via USB, the Classic Edition and the laser rear light use AAA batteries and the wheel light a CR2032.
Fitting and use
The headlights and the light kit strap onto the handlebar with silicone or rubber mounts without tools, the rear lights go on the seatpost or rear mudguard and the tyre LED hooks on with pre-fitted hooks and a rubber strap. The grips with indicators replace the original grips on a 22 mm handlebar, for example on the Xiaomi M365 and Ninebot Max G30. The universal indicator system connects to the vehicle's electrical system with an M10 thread and a 100 cm cable, so have someone used to wiring fit it. Angle the front light slightly downwards so you do not dazzle oncoming traffic.
Rules in the EU – electric scooter lights and bicycle lights
Road rules across the EU require a bicycle ridden in the dark to have a white or yellow front light, a red rear light and reflectors – white at the front, red at the rear and orange or white on the sides. The same requirement applies to electric scooters in the bicycle class, meaning max 250 W and 20–25 km/h depending on the country, because they are treated like bicycles; some countries also demand type-approved lights, so check the national rules. The scooter's built-in light is rarely enough to see the road, so an extra headlight is a clear upgrade. Multicoloured wheel LEDs and laser lines are visibility décor that does not replace the white front and red rear light, and indicators are an optional accessory. Caring for bicycle lights and headlights
Wipe the lens after rain and keep the USB port closed while riding. Charge the USB lights before they are completely empty – the Extreme Edition takes 5–6 hours, the Premium Edition 4.5 hours and the tyre LED 2 hours – and store them indoors in winter, since cold reduces capacity. Remove AAA and coin-cell batteries if the light will sit unused for a long time and check that mounts and rubber straps have not cracked before the autumn season.
