Choosing the right electric scooter protection – guide
The best protection is the one that fits your exact model and the wear you actually put the vehicle through. Here we go through the sub-types with examples from the range, compatibility, fitting and care.
Display covers – model-specific electric scooter protection for Xiaomi, Ninebot and KuKirin
The display sits right in the weather and gets scratches, sun and rain first. That is why display covers are the largest sub-type, almost all in soft silicone that slips over the instrument panel. The display cover for Ninebot MAX G3 / F3 / F3 Pro and the display cover for Ninebot E2 (11.3 × 5.1 cm) are moulded for their respective displays and fit without tools, while the display cover for Xiaomi 4 Pro Max (13.4 × 4.4 cm, around 20 g) covers the wider panel on the 4 series. For Xiaomi there are also covers for the 4, 4 Lite, 4 Pro / 5, 4 Ultra and Elite, for Ninebot for the F20–F40, ZT3, the ES series and G30. KuKirin owners choose the version for the G2 Pro/G2 Max, and the Smart display cover fits the KuKirin M4/M4 Pro and Wheely X7 among others. The silicone covers are water-resistant but no IP rating is stated.
Battery guards and charge port covers against water, knocks and cold
The battery is the most expensive part and sits at the very bottom of an electric scooter. The stainless battery guard is a base plate in stainless steel for the Ninebot G30 series and the Xiaomi M365, 1S, Essential, Pro and Pro 2, and the version for the Ninebot G2 does the same job for the G2, G2D, G2E and G65. The plate takes kerb knocks and stone chips instead of the battery cover. For e-bikes there is a dust- and water-resistant sleeve in SBR fabric (376 × 105 × 112 mm, 106 g) for Hailong batteries and a frame cover in neoprene (53 × 37 cm) that insulates against the cold in winter. The charge port is the next weak point: the rubber charge port covers for Xiaomi (58 × 16 × 5 mm), Ninebot G30 and KuKirin G2 Max are small plugs you press into the port after charging so that water and dust never reach the connector.
Splash guards, rain covers and saddle covers for autumn and winter
The Ninebot splash guard and Xiaomi splash guard (7 × 9.5 cm) are rubber flaps that extend the mudguard on the G30 series and the M365 family respectively, so that water and grit do not spray up. The rear bicycle mudguard in PP5 plastic (28.2 cm, 20.5 g) mounts under the saddle. The Smart rain cover is a universal cover in waterproof polyester measuring 200 × 110 cm that weighs 180 g and protects a parked electric scooter or bicycle against rain, sun and dust. The saddle cover in PU-coated polyester (26 × 24 cm) keeps the saddle dry on an electric scooter with a seat or an e-bike. How to choose electric scooter protection – compatibility and materials
Start from the model. Display covers, charge port plugs, splash guards and battery plates are moulded, so a cover for the Xiaomi 4 Pro Max will not fit the Xiaomi 4 Lite. Check the list of compatible models on the product page against the marking on your electric scooter. Universal items are the rain cover, the saddle cover, the thumb throttle cover and brake lever cover as well as the edge guard, a silicone strip for all Xiaomi and Ninebot models. The Xiaomi disc brake guard in PVC protects the brake disc in a fall on the M365, Pro, Pro 2, 3, Essential and 1S. The material determines the function:
- Silicone and rubber (most of the range): soft, seals against water and dust, easy to remove for cleaning.
- Stainless steel, PVC and ABS: hard shells that take knocks – battery plates, disc brake guards and the KuKirin G3 rear footrest guard.
- Neoprene, SBR fabric and polyester: insulating sleeves and covers for the battery, saddle and the whole vehicle.
Fitting and caring for electric scooter protection
Most covers fit without tools: the silicone covers slip over the display, the plugs press into the charge port and the splash guards attach to the existing mudguard. The battery plates bolt to the chassis. Wipe the display before fitting so that no grit gets trapped underneath, and rinse the silicone covers a few times a season. A cover changes nothing about the vehicle's classification – an electric scooter in the bicycle class is still limited to 20–25 km/h and 250 W depending on the country; see the EU overview of road rules and safety for the rules where you ride. Which electric scooter protection matters most?
Start with a display cover and a charge port plug – the display and the charge port are the most common places where water and dust cause short circuits. If you ride on gravel or over kerbs, a stainless battery plate is the next step, and if you park outdoors a rain cover pays for itself.
Will the display cover fit my electric scooter?
The display covers are moulded per model, so choose the one that names your exact model: for example Ninebot MAX G3/F3, Ninebot E2, Xiaomi 4 Pro Max or KuKirin G2 Pro/G2 Max. Does a rain cover make an electric scooter waterproof?
No. The cover in waterproof polyester protects a parked electric scooter against rain, sun and dust, but for riding in the wet the vehicle's own IP rating applies. The covers reduce the risk of water reaching the display, charge port and battery but do not replace the seals.
Do I need electric scooter battery protection in winter?
Cold temporarily reduces battery capacity, and for e-bikes there is a 53 × 37 cm neoprene sleeve that insulates the battery in the frame. On an electric scooter, battery protection is mainly about knocks and moisture: a stainless base plate for the Ninebot G2 and G30 series and the Xiaomi M365 family takes the hits instead of the battery cover.
