Choosing the right KuKirin electric scooter – a guide to the models
KuKirin has a wide range where the names look alike but the models differ a great deal. Here we sort out the series, the figures, the comfort and what applies on European roads.
The tracks among KuKirin electric scooters
The light track is the S1 Max: 16 kg, 350 W, 8-inch puncture-proof honeycomb tyres and 39 km of stated range – the only model that is comfortable to carry up stairs. The middle track is single-motor all-rounders with a 45 km/h top speed: G2 (800 W, 55 km), G2 Pro (600 W, saddle), M4 Max (800 W, 64 km, 24 kg) and T3 (800 W, 58 km). Here you also find the G2 Pro (ABE), G2 (VMP) and G2 Pro (VMP) with 500 W, 65 km of stated range and top speeds of 20 and 25 km/h respectively.
The third track is long-distance: G2 Max (1000 W, 80 km, saddle), G4 (2000 W, 75 km, 11-inch tyres) and G2 Master (dual motors, 70 km). The fourth is the dual-motor top end: G2 Ultra (1600 W, app), G4 Ultra (2000 W, 4-hour charging) and G3 Pro (2400 W, 80 km, removable battery). The suffixes Pro, Max, Ultra, Master, ABE and VMP are part of the model name – similar names can mean completely different batteries and motors.
Range and battery – how far a KuKirin electric scooter goes
Stated range is the manufacturer's figure under favourable conditions. Expect 60–75 % in real-world riding depending on rider weight, speed, hills and cold. The G2 Max and G3 Pro top the range with a stated 80 km, roughly 50–60 km in practice. The G4 is rated at 75 km, the G4 Ultra and G2 Master at 70 km, the ABE and VMP versions at 65 km and the M4 Max at 64 km.
Battery capacity in watt-hours is the most honest measure: the G3 Pro has 1206 Wh, the G4 and G4 Ultra 1200 Wh (60 V 20 Ah), the G2 Master 1082 Wh and the G2 Max 960 Wh, while the simpler G2 models sit at 720–864 Wh. Charging time varies from 4 hours on the G4 Ultra via 7–8 hours on most G2 models to 10–12 hours on the G4; the G3 Pro has dual charging ports. Do compare with other long-range electric scooters.
Motor, hills and weight
Rated motor output runs from 350 W in the S1 Max to 2400 W in the G3 Pro. The 500–800 W single motors in the G2, T3 and M4 Max are rated for 19–20° climbs, the G2 Max with 1000 W for 30°. The dual-motor models G2 Ultra (1600 W), G2 Master and G4 Ultra (2000 W) and G3 Pro (2400 W, 35° climb) are built for steep gravel roads and heavy loads. All except the S1 Max (100 kg) are approved for riders up to 120 kg.
More power means more weight: the S1 Max weighs 16 kg, the G2 Pro (ABE) 22.3 kg, the M4 Max 24 kg and the G2 26 kg, while the dual-motor models and the G4 sit at 30.4–39.6 kg. Comfort – tyres, suspension and brakes
Front and rear suspension is standard on almost every model; only the S1 Max makes do with rear suspension. Together with 9- or 10-inch pneumatic tyres with an off-road tread (11 inches on the G4 and G4 Ultra), that gives high comfort on cobbles and gravel; the S1 Max instead has 8-inch honeycomb tyres that never puncture.
Dual disc brakes are fitted to almost every model, with E-ABS added on the G2, G2 (VMP), T3 and M4 Max. The G3 Pro has hydraulic oil brakes and the S1 Max E-ABS plus a foot brake. An ignition key comes on most models and the G2 Ultra is alone in having an app. If you want to sit down, the G2 Max and G2 Pro come with a saddle – compare them with the other electric scooters with a saddle. Rules in Europe for a KuKirin electric scooter
In most EU countries an e-scooter counts as a bicycle only if it is limited to 20–25 km/h and, usually, 250 W of rated motor output. It may then use the cycle path with one rider at a time, while helmet and minimum-age rules vary from country to country. No KuKirin meets both requirements: the G2 Pro (ABE) is built for 20 km/h but has a 500 W motor, and the others have both more power and top speeds of 25–75 km/h. Formally, therefore, they are all treated as mopeds in most countries and need national registration and insurance on public roads, or enclosed private land. The ABE and VMP versions are configured for the German and Spanish type-approval rules respectively – check the paperwork for the exact version and what applies where you live.
Several models, including the G2, M4 Max, G4 and G3 Pro, have a 25 km/h limiter, but the limiter does not change the classification since output exceeds 250 W. Does KuKirin have models with a saddle, an app and indicators?
The G2 Max and G2 Pro come with a saddle, and both have an adjustable handlebar. An app is only available on the G2 Ultra, while indicators are included on most models, as is an ignition key. All models except the S1 Max, which has rear suspension, have front and rear suspension.
