Models: which electric mountain bike suits you
If you want a classic hardtail with 27.5-inch wheels, the VARUN M27-1 Pro is the entry choice: 500 W, 624 Wh, 21 gears, an app and 100 km of stated range at 23.6 kg. The Duotts E29 is the premium model in pedelec class: 250 W rated (720 W peak), 14 gears, full suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. For pure off-road riding there are fat bikes such as the LOOKROAD L20 with 1,500 W, 80 Nm, full suspension and 960 Wh, and the VARUN M26-2 Plus with 750 W, IP65 and a rear rack. The LOOKROAD L28 Max is the tourer of the group with 1,440 Wh and 160 km of stated range, while the LOOKROAD L28 and L28 MIN are 28-inch versions for gravel roads. The VARUN M24-1 is the lightest at 21.25 kg and suits shorter riders, and the VARUN M26-3 Pro is a folding e-MTB.
Battery and range: how far an electric mountain bike goes
Batteries stretch from 281 Wh in the VARUN M24-1 to 1,440 Wh in the LOOKROAD L28 Max, and all of them have a removable battery so you can charge indoors. Stated range is 50–160 km, but expect 60–75 % in real riding – terrain, climbs, cold weather and how much you pedal yourself decide. 100 km of stated range therefore becomes 60–75 km on mixed ground. The furthest go the LOOKROAD L28 Max (160 km), LOOKROAD L28 (140 km) and LOOKROAD L20 (130 km). Motor, weight and performance
Rated motor power runs from 250 W in the Duotts E29 to 1,500 W in the LOOKROAD L20, with torque between 40 and 80 Nm. More torque gives easier starts on steep hills and better traction in sand and snow, but also more weight. Weight varies from 21.25 kg (VARUN M24-1) to 39 kg (VARUN M26-2 Plus and LOOKROAD L20), so consider whether the bike will be lifted into the car or carried up stairs. Maximum load is 100 kg on the L28 series and 150 kg on the rest. Most have 7 gears, the VARUN M27-1 Pro 21 and the Duotts E29 14.
Suspension, brakes and equipment
Full suspension is found on the Duotts E29, LOOKROAD L20, LOOKROAD L20 MIN and VARUN M26-3 Pro. Full suspension gives the most comfort on rooty trails; the front fork on the others is enough for gravel and forest roads. Every e-MTB has front and rear disc brakes; the Duotts E29, LOOKROAD L20, L28 and L28 Max have hydraulic disc brakes with more stopping power for less hand effort. Fat bike tyres are the best choice for sand, snow and mud. All have a display, the VARUN M27-1 Pro and Duotts E29 have an app, several models have cruise control, the LOOKROAD series has front and rear lights, the L28 series a basket and several VARUN models IP65. Electric mountain bike and the rules in Europe
Across the EU a bike counts as a pedelec (EPAC) if the motor is rated at max 250 W, only assists up to 25 km/h and any throttle stops at 6 km/h. In this category the Duotts E29 meets that: 250 W rated and assistance that stops at 25 km/h, which means the cycle lane, no registration and no licence requirement. The other models have 350–1,500 W rated power and top speeds of 32–55 km/h. They ship limited to 25 km/h, but with more than 250 W they formally count as speed pedelecs or mopeds – on public roads that means registration, a driving licence, a helmet and insurance, with the details varying by country. How far does an electric mountain bike go on one charge?
The models in the category have 50–160 km of stated range depending on the battery, from 281 to 1,440 Wh. Expect 60–75 % in real riding, so roughly 30–120 km, because terrain, climbs, weight and cold weather draw more power than flat tarmac. If you pedal actively and use the gears you will get further.
Can you ride an electric mountain bike on the cycle lane in Europe?
Yes, if it meets the pedelec class: max 250 W rated power and assistance only up to 25 km/h. In our range that applies to the Duotts E29. Models with a stronger motor count as speed pedelecs or mopeds and may only be ridden on private enclosed land without registration, even if they are limited to 25 km/h – check your national rules.
Is an e-MTB suitable for commuting on tarmac?
Yes, especially models with 27.5- or 28-inch wheels such as the VARUN M27-1 Pro, Duotts E29 and the LOOKROAD L28 series, which roll easily on tarmac and have lights or a basket for everyday use. Fat bikes with wide tyres are heavier and use more battery on hard surfaces, but work well if you want one bike for both forest and city.
