Choosing the right commuter electric scooter – a guide
Three questions decide which commuter electric scooter to choose: how long is the journey, how often will you carry the vehicle, and does it need to be allowed on the cycle lane. Light commuter electric scooters: the models under 16 kg
If the electric scooter is coming with you on the train and up the stairs, weight matters most – and a light electric scooter does not have to be a weak one. The lightest adult model is the HX X6 at 10.5 kg with a 250 W motor, 20 km of range and a removable battery, followed by the SEEDREAM Red Wing Mini at 11 kg with puncture-free tyres and 2–3 hours of charging. The HX X7 weighs 12 kg, has 10-inch pneumatic tyres, 25 km of range and a battery you lift out and charge at the office. The Nanrobot H1 (12.5 kg, IP55) and iScooter i9M (13.1 kg, 500 W) are compact all-rounders, the iScooter i9 Max gives you suspension and 40 km under 15 kg, and the HX X8 combines 15 kg with 45 km of range, a removable battery and 3 hours of charging.
For children there are several models: the Wheely Junior S2, S2 Pro, S3 and S5 weigh 6.6–8.2 kg and do 14 km/h, while the NAVEE K100 Max (9.6 kg, 16 km/h, 24 km of range) is made for children aged 6–14 up to 50 kg.
Range and battery: how far a commuter electric scooter takes you
Expect real-world range to be 60–75 percent of the manufacturer's figure – cold weather, hills, rider weight and frequent stops all draw more power. With a 10 km commute each way you therefore need at least 25–30 km of stated range to avoid charging at work. The iScooter i10 has the biggest battery in the category at 42 V 15 Ah (630 Wh) and 45 km of range, the iScooter F3 goes furthest with 60 km on 48 V 13 Ah, and the Xiaomi 4 Pro Nordic Edition manages 55 km with 36 V 12.4 Ah. Motor and weight: performance for a city electric scooter
In town you need the right power for the weight, not the most power. 250–350 W is enough on flat ground, while 500 W and up gives you a margin on 15–20 degree hills and for riders close to the 100–120 kg maximum load. The iScooter W6 (500 W, 15 kg) and Wheely J04 (600 W, 36 V 15 Ah, 15 kg, solid tyres) deliver power without getting heavy, while the iScooter F3 (1,000 W, 25 degree climbing) and Wheely N3 Max (800 W) are the strongest in the category. Most brake with E-ABS plus a disc or drum brake – the drum brake needs the least maintenance in winter conditions.
Comfort and equipment: suspension, tyres and indicators
Cobblestones and kerbs are the city's comfort question. Many models have suspension, such as the iScooter i10 and W8 with shock absorbers front and rear, and the 12-inch tyres on the Wheely A19 and Nanrobot M5 roll more smoothly than 8.5-inch tyres. Several models have puncture-free tyres (solid, honeycomb or puncture-resistant) – no inner tubes to repair, but a slightly firmer feel. Several models have indicators, many are controlled via an app and a few have an ignition key. Rules in Europe: which commuter electric scooter is allowed on the cycle lane
Across the EU an electric scooter may use the cycle lane without registration only when it stays within the national limits, typically 250 W rated motor power and 20–25 km/h depending on the country – in most countries a helmet is required or strongly recommended for younger riders and only one person may ride. The children's models in the category meet even the strictest 20 km/h limit: Wheely Junior S2, S2 Pro, S3, S5 (130 W, 14 km/h) and the NAVEE K100 Max (150 W, 16 km/h). The adult models exceed one of the limits and are formally moped class in the strictest countries, where they may only be ridden on private enclosed land without registration – so this applies to most commuter electric scooters here. Watch the borderline cases: the HX X6, SEEDREAM Red Wing Mini and NAVEE G5 have 250 W rated power but do 22–25 km/h and qualify in countries with a 25 km/h limit, while the NAVEE V25i Pro II and SEEDREAM M5 stay at 20 km/h but have 300 and 350 W respectively.
