On the product page, weight looks like just another number. In everyday life it is the one you notice when you carry the scooter up to the third floor, lift it into the car or step onto a bus.
How much does an electric scooter weigh? The short answer
An adult electric scooter usually weighs 18–30 kg. Light commuter models are around 18–23 kg, more powerful models with suspension and a big battery 30–40 kg, and the most extreme over 50 kg. Kids’ electric scooters often weigh 6–10 kg. If you will carry it often, under 20 kg is a good target.
Weight by type of electric scooter
| Type | Typical weight | Examples (manufacturer data) |
|---|---|---|
| Kids’ model | 6–10 kg | GYROOR H30 Max 6 kg, NAVEE K100 Max 9.6 kg |
| Light commuter | 17–23 kg | NAVEE V25i Pro II 17.7 kg |
| Commuter with suspension | 23–30 kg | NAVEE ST3 24 kg, iScooter W10 24.8 kg |
| Powerful model | 30–40 kg | ENGWE Y700 31.7 kg, NAVEE XT5 Ultra 38.6 kg |
| Extreme model | over 50 kg | DUALTRON Alien 53.5 kg |
The weight on the product page is the manufacturer’s figure for the scooter without a rider. Always compare like with like – some brands quote it with the battery, others without accessories such as a seat.
Why are some models so much heavier?
- The battery: more capacity means more cells and more kilos. It is usually the single biggest item.
- The motors: a dual-motor model carries twice the motor.
- Wheels and tyres: wide 10–12-inch pneumatic tyres weigh more than small solid wheels.
- Suspension and frame: front and rear suspension, a wider deck and a sturdier frame add stability – and weight.
How much can you carry?
Think about how often the scooter will be lifted, not just how far it will be ridden. Reviewing a 35 kg model, Electrek wrote that it is not a scooter you casually carry up a flight of stairs – and that even lifting it into a car takes good form.
- Carrying it every day up stairs or to a storage room: aim for under 20 kg.
- Lifting it now and then, for example into the car: 20–30 kg is fine for most people.
- Parked in a garage or yard and ridden from there: weight matters less.
AUTO BILD came to the same conclusion about a model of around 35 kg: it is not made to be carried regularly (in German). If it is coming on the train or bus, the operator’s rules apply too – see taking an electric scooter on a train or bus. Carry it with both hands close to your body, one on the stem and one on the deck, and lift with your legs.
Weight, range and comfort go together
A heavier scooter usually has a bigger battery and more range, and it feels steadier on rough tarmac. A light model is easier to handle but has a smaller battery and less range. If you mostly ride short distances in town, a lighter model is enough for most people – see our electric scooters for the city.
Check the maximum load on the product page too. If you are heavier, you need a sturdier model – and the weight comes with it.
Electric scooters for kids
A kids’ model often weighs 6–10 kg, so the child can steer and lift it. An adult scooter of 20 kg is hard for a child or a light teenager to handle. How to choose by age is covered in electric scooter as a Christmas gift.
