Choosing the right rideable suitcase – guide
The category splits into two clear types, and the choice depends on who will be riding. Here we go through the differences, the specifications, the battery on the plane and the rules in the EU.
Electric rideable suitcase or manual ride-on suitcase
The electric models are built for adults. The Air Pro Edition is the roomiest with 40 L, a 150 kg maximum load, three speed modes up to 8 km/h and 12–15 km of range on a charge that takes 1.5–2 hours. The Titan Pro Edition has a 150 W motor, a removable 2.6 Ah battery that also charges your phone, a folding seat, LED lights and 11–20 km/h. The PowerDrive Pro Edition is the lightest electric model at 6.8 kg with a three-wheel scooter section, a hand brake plus rear disc brake and front and rear lights. The AeroDrive Pro Edition and AeroDrive Edition run at 13 km/h with a 250 W and a brushless motor respectively, 28 L of volume and a TSA lock – the AeroDrive also has a front opening and handles a 7-degree incline. The Urban Move Edition is three-wheeled with an integrated steering handle, 250 W and up to 5 km of range.
The manual ones are suitcases to sit on and roll, designed for children. The Comfort Ride Edition (20 inches, 20 L, backrest, sprung wheels, 30 kg maximum load), the Mini Travel Edition (horse-shaped with a safety belt and combination lock for ages 3–6), the Panda Edition (2.8 kg with a tow bar and carry strap), the RideFun Edition (motorcycle-inspired, 2.0 kg, from 18 months), the Classic Edition (2-in-1 walker from 2 years) and the Smart kids' scooter with suitcase with light-up wheels. The Urban Glide Edition is the exception: a 21-inch cabin case with a fold-out skateboard footboard that both children and adults can glide on.
How to choose a rideable suitcase by traveller and dimensions
Start with who will be riding. For adults, maximum load (90–150 kg), volume (28–40 L) and own weight (6.8–9.8 kg) decide. All electric models are in 20-inch format, for example 55x24x36 cm for the AeroDrive and 53x28x35 cm for the Titan Pro, but always check your airline's cabin dimensions since they differ. For children, choose by age and height: Classic and RideFun from 2 years and 18 months respectively, Mini Travel for children 82–100 cm tall, Comfort Ride when the child wants a backrest. The maximum load on the children's suitcases is 25–30 kg, so they fit up to roughly school age.
Battery, range and flying with an electric rideable suitcase
Range is 5–15 km per charge, which is enough for several terminal changes on a travel day. Four models (Titan Pro, PowerDrive Pro, AeroDrive and AeroDrive Pro) have a removable battery, which is practical both for charging in the hotel room and for flying: a removable lithium battery must always be carried in the cabin. The airlines' usual limit is that batteries under 100 Wh go in hand luggage without permission, while 100–160 Wh require the airline's approval. The AeroDrive Edition states 93.6 Wh and is therefore under the limit; the Air Pro has 2600 mAh at 42 V, which corresponds to around 109 Wh and may need approval. The other models do not state Wh in the specification, so always check with the airline before departure. Charging time is 1.5–3 hours with the supplied charger.
Assembly and use at the airport
The electric suitcases come fully assembled: fold out the steering or telescopic handle, insert the battery, switch on and select the lowest speed mode indoors. Keep to walking pace between gates, stop at escalators and lifts and never ride with a child in front of you. On the children's suitcases you fasten the belt (Mini Travel) or the fixing strap (RideFun), pull the strap or tow bar and let the child sit with their feet on the footrest. The Urban Glide is used as a normal trolley until you fold out the footboard.
Rules and safety in the EU for a rideable suitcase
Indoors at airports and stations the terminal's rules apply – in practice walking pace of around 6 km/h among other travellers. Outdoors, most EU countries treat an electric rideable suitcase like an electric scooter if it does no more than 20–25 km/h (the limit varies by country) and has no more than 250 W: then it may be ridden on cycle paths, one person at a time, and helmet rules for children vary by country. The Air Pro (8 km/h), the AeroDrive and AeroDrive Pro (13 km/h) and the Titan Pro and PowerDrive Pro (11–20 km/h) stay within the limit in most countries. The Urban Move is only stated as under 25 km/h, so expect to use it indoors and on private land. The manual children's suitcases are ride-on toys, not vehicles – keep the child under supervision. Care, service and warranty for your rideable suitcase
Wipe the shell and wheels after the trip, charge the battery to about half for longer storage and store the suitcase somewhere dry. Check that the handle, seat and wheels are secure before every trip.
