Electric cargo bike

Buying guide

Electric cargo bike for everyday loads and deliveries

This collection includes electric bikes for shopping, luggage and deliveries, from regular e-bikes with a rack or fixed basket to longtails and cargo trikes. You do not need a large cargo bike for every shopping bag, work bag or small parcel. Choose around the size of your load, secure attachment and the model’s permitted load.

Selection requires usable, clear loading space where luggage can be secured. Racks occupied by a seat, very small carriers, moped-style models and bikes in our Compact collection are excluded.

In short

  • Usable clear space on an included stable rack, basket or cargo platform.
  • Compact bikes, moped-style models and load areas occupied by a seat are excluded.
  • Compare carrier dimensions and load limits separately from total payload.
  • For delivery work, check bag fit, range, brakes and maintenance needs.

How to choose an electric cargo bike

Match the load carrier to what you carry

A fixed basket can suit small shopping trips. A rear rack can carry compatible panniers or secured luggage, while a longtail or cargo trike offers more space. ENGWE L20 Boost illustrates a front basket and rear rack; KOOLUX X13 and Fafrees F20 Mate offer other load layouts. For food deliveries or courier work, check that your specific bag can be attached according to the carrier’s instructions. Collection membership does not mean every delivery bag fits or that every model suits a full work shift. Distinguish included equipment from optional accessories.

We select bikes with practical loading space that is free of passenger seats and large enough to secure everyday luggage. A tiny bracket behind a long saddle is not enough. Compact bikes have a separate selection. Check the actual supplied version; do not rely on removing a seat or buying optional equipment to make it qualify.

Total payload and carrier limits are different

Check the manufacturer's definition of maximum load: rider, passengers, accessories and goods may all count towards it. Each basket, platform or seat can also have a separate limit. A 150 kg total payload does not mean the rear rack can carry 150 kg. Ask us if the limits for your chosen version are unclear.

Two or three wheels for your route

A two-wheeled cargo bike needs balancing when starting and stopping. A trike supports itself at a standstill, but cornering speed and load distribution still matter. Check width, length, storage space and the bike's own weight. Browse the wider electric tricycle collection too.

Battery range when carrying a load

Compare battery capacity and stated range for the exact battery version. Pedal-assist range is different from range without pedalling. Heavy loads, gradients, temperature and assistance level affect the result, so leave a margin for the return trip. Explore more long-range electric bikes.

Check equipment and intended use

A cargo platform is not automatically a passenger seat. Carrying a child or another passenger requires a model and seating system intended for that use, with suitable protection and weight limits. Check what is included and what is optional. Collection membership is not proof of road approval; check the exact version and the rules where you intend to ride.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electric cargo bike need a large cargo box?

No. A regular electric bike with a stable rack or fixed basket can qualify if it offers practical, clear loading space. We exclude compact and moped-style models and racks occupied by a seat. Always check the included equipment and its load limit.

How much can an electric cargo bike carry?

It depends on the model. Check both total permitted payload and each carrier's separate limit. The rider and equipment may count towards the total.

Can every cargo bike carry children?

No. The exact model and seat must be intended for the passenger, with the required protection and all weight limits respected. Accessories may be sold separately.

Is a cargo trike easier to ride?

Three wheels provide support at a standstill, but cornering feels different from a two-wheeler. Check its width and practise at low speed with a light load.

How does carrying a load affect range?

Extra weight can increase energy use, especially when starting or climbing. Compare the correct riding mode and battery version, and leave a range margin.
