Electric scooter tyres – solid tyres, pneumatic tyres, inner tubes and motor wheels

How to choose the right electric scooter tyres
The tyre is the part that wears fastest and matters most: grip, comfort, range and the risk of being stranded. Start with the right dimension, then choose the tyre type by how you ride and how much maintenance you are prepared to do, and make sure you have the right tools before you start changing.
1. Find the right size – 8.5 or 10 inch electric scooter tyres
The dimension is moulded into the sidewall, for example 8.5x2 (Xiaomi M365, Pro, 1S, Essential), 10x2.5 (Ninebot Max G30) or 80/65-6 and 90/65-6.5 on more powerful models. Always choose the same dimension as the original – a bigger tyre can rub against the mudguard or not fit in the fork. 2. Pneumatic, honeycomb or solid tyres
- Pneumatic tyres give the best comfort and grip, roll most easily and are therefore best for range – but can puncture and need the right pressure.
- Honeycomb tyres are puncture-proof with air pockets that give a little cushioning. A good compromise for commuters who want zero maintenance.
- Solid and semi-solid tyres are completely maintenance-free as far as air goes but ride hardest and suit models with suspension best.

For winter riding there are studded tyres in 8.5 and 10 inch – honeycomb, semi-solid and pneumatic. Check whether studded tyres are permitted where you ride. Loose studs, anti-slip covers and other winter gear are under winter electric scooter accessories.
3. Inner tube and valve
Pneumatic tyres need an inner tube in the same dimension. Choose a reinforced tube if you ride a lot in the city, and a tube with an angled valve for models where the valve sits tight against the motor – which applies to most 8.5 and 10 inch wheels from Xiaomi and Ninebot. Always fit a new tube when you change the tyre, and check that the rim tape is intact so sharp edges do not puncture the new tube.
4. Motor wheel – when the whole wheel needs replacing
On many models the motor sits in the front wheel. If the motor is damaged, the bearing worn or the tyre vulcanised onto the rim, a complete motor wheel is often the easiest swap. Check the motor's power, connector and number of cable cores against the original – a 350 W wheel for the Xiaomi Pro does not fit every Xiaomi model. 5. Parts and tools for the job
For a pneumatic tyre you need the new tyre, a new inner tube, two tyre levers (never a screwdriver) and a pump. Solid tyres take more force, and if the motor sits in the wheel its cable often has to be disconnected. We walk through the whole job step by step in our tyre-change guide. 6. Tyre pressure and care
The correct pressure is the one in the manual – it should sit within the range on the sidewall and never above the maximum. Too little pressure means heavier rolling, shorter range and snakebite punctures against kerbs; too much means less grip. Check the pressure every week, look for cracks and glass in the tread and replace the tyre when the tread is worn. Solid tyres wear too – replace them when the rubber cracks or wears unevenly. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new inner tube with the new tyre?
For a pneumatic tyre with a tube: yes, fit a new tube at the same time. The old one has taken the shape of the old tyre and may have small damage that is hard to spot. Choose the same size as the tyre and the same valve type as the original – straight or angled. Tubeless, honeycomb and solid tyres have no inner tube.
