Guide: choosing electric scooter brakes – part by part
The electric scooter brakes range follows how the brake is built: a disc brake with pads, disc and caliper, or a drum brake enclosed in the wheel. On top of that come the lever and cable that carry the force from the handlebar. This guide explains what each part does and what to compare before you order. Other parts for the same vehicle are in the spare parts portal.
Which electric scooter brakes fit your model?
Go by the full model name, including generation and suffixes such as Pro, Max or Lite. You will find it in the manual and on the vehicle's rating plate. When a part fits several models, all of them are listed in the title, for example Ninebot F20/F25/F30/F40 or KuKirin G2 Pro/G2 Max. If your model is not listed, assume the part does not fit. Also compare the shape, mounts and dimensions in the pictures with your old part.
Electric scooter brake pads and discs – the wear parts
On a disc brake the brake pads wear first, and they are replaced in pairs. Pads are available for Xiaomi, the KuKirin G2, G3 and G4 series, iScooter, NIU KQi, INOKIM OXO, NAMI Burn-E and the Ninebot F3, P, GT and ZT3 series, among others. The brake disc is replaced when it is warped, scored or worn down. Discs differ in diameter and bolt pattern between models – for the VSETT 10+ the title states 145 mm, for instance – so always choose the disc marked for your model.
Calipers and drum brakes
The caliper is the part that presses the pads against the disc. It is available for Xiaomi, KuKirin, Ninebot, HX, NIU and VSETT, among others, and for the Ninebot ZT3 and VSETT 9/9+ the front and rear calipers are sold separately. A drum brake sits enclosed in the wheel hub and is replaced as one unit. Drum brakes are available for models such as the Ninebot G2, E2 Pro, E3 and D28, Xiaomi 3 Lite, 4 Lite (2nd Gen) and the 5 series, VSETT 8/8+, INOKIM OX/QK4 and Dualtron.
Brake levers and brake cables
The brake lever is model-specific because it often has built-in electronics or extra functions: for the NAVEE V25/V40/V50 there is a lever with bell, and for the Xiaomi Elite a lever with indicator button. The brake cable wears and stretches over time and is an inexpensive part to replace. For the Ninebot Max G3, ZT3 and P65/P100 the front and rear brake cables are separate parts. The category also includes a brake lever cover and a disc brake guard; more guards are under protection.
Adjusting electric scooter brakes – when is it enough?
If the brake bites late or the lever travels far towards the handlebar, adjusting the cable at the lever or the caliper is often enough. If the disc rubs against the pads, the caliper may need centring. If adjustment does not help, look at the wear parts: thin pads, a warped disc or a cable that sticks. Check the brakes regularly and always before riding after a replacement – follow the manufacturer's instructions for your model.
Replacing electric scooter brakes – fitting and help
Pads, cable and lever can be replaced by anyone used to working on bicycles. Keep the disc and pads free from oil and grease, tighten the bolts as stated in the manual and test the brake at low speed before setting off. Drum brakes and calipers usually require removing the wheel – if you are unsure, let a bicycle or scooter workshop do the job. If you cannot find the right part, customer service will help, and for a fault on a vehicle bought from us, read more on the warranty page.
Frequently asked questions
Which electric scooter brakes fit my model?
The ones with your model name in the product title. Brake parts are model-specific, and generations differ too. If a part fits several models, all of them are listed in the title – if yours is not, assume the part does not fit.
How do I know when electric scooter brake pads need replacing?
Typical signs are weaker braking, a lever that has to be pulled further in, or scraping and squealing from the wheel. Look at the pads: if the friction material is almost gone, replace them. Always replace both pads in the same caliper at the same time.
What is the difference between a disc brake and a drum brake?
A disc brake has a visible disc on the wheel and a caliper with pads that clamp it – pads, disc and caliper can be replaced separately. A drum brake sits enclosed in the wheel hub and is replaced as a complete unit. You can see which type your model has on the wheel and in the manual.
Can I replace or adjust electric scooter brakes myself?
Adjusting the cable and replacing pads, cable or lever is manageable for anyone used to working on bicycles. Drum brakes and calipers are a bigger job because the wheel usually has to come off. Always test the brake at low speed afterwards, and ask a workshop for help if you are unsure.
How do delivery and returns work for brake parts?
Free shipping on orders over €69.90 – otherwise €6.95. You have 14-day returns and a 2-year warranty, in addition to your statutory rights.
