Buying guide
Throttle electric bike
A throttle electric bike can offer a mode in which the motor drives the bike without pedalling. Pure Electric brings together models with this function, from compact bikes to larger frames and electric tricycles. Compare the supplied version, motor-only range and fit before choosing.
In short
- Motor-only riding means travelling without pedalling. Walk assist or a pedalling Boost function alone does not qualify.
- Pedal-assist range and range without pedalling are separate figures.
- Compare battery, weight, saddle, brakes and load limits for your needs.
- Throttle operation and included equipment can vary between versions.
Throttle electric bike – buying guide
What does Pure Electric mean?
In a motor-only riding mode, the pedals do not need to keep moving for the motor to drive the bike. Pedal assist helps while you pedal. Walk assist, often around 6 km/h, helps you push the bike and is a different function. A Boost button may add assistance while pedalling without providing motor-only riding.
Range on a throttle electric bike
Use the separate range without pedalling figure when comparing motor-only use. The ordinary range may refer to pedal assist. For example, DYU D3F has a stated ordinary range of 48 km and a motor-only range of 25 km. These are figures for different riding modes, not a universal conversion formula. If the separate figure is missing, check the exact battery version.
Battery, charging and weight
Compare capacity in Wh, charging time and whether the battery is removable. Temperature, speed, hills, tyre pressure and load affect distance. Allow a margin and compare like-for-like battery versions. A second or optional battery can change both range and weight. A larger battery may be less convenient if you carry the bike upstairs.
Choose the right size and equipment
Compact models take up less space; larger frames offer different riding positions. Check recommended rider height, saddle height, total weight and load limits. Compare brakes and suspension for your surfaces. For a tricycle, also check width and storage space. Baskets, racks and folding mechanisms vary by model; electric mode does not imply these features.
Check the supplied throttle version
Find out whether the throttle is fitted, supplied separately or sold as an option, and whether it is restricted to walk assist. A model name or a photograph of a control does not establish its function. This category describes a feature, not approval for roads or cycle paths. Check the exact model documentation and the rules where you intend to ride.

Frequently asked questions
What is a throttle electric bike?
A bike with a control that operates the motor. To qualify as Pure Electric here, it needs a genuine riding mode without pedalling, not just walk assist.
Is walk assist the same as Pure Electric?
No. Walk assist helps you push the bike at low speed. Boost while pedalling is not, by itself, a motor-only riding mode.
How far can an electric bike go without pedalling?
Check the separate motor-only range for the exact model and battery. Do not calculate it as a fixed percentage of the pedal-assist range.
Can I still pedal a bike with electric mode?
Check the model’s riding modes. Many offer ordinary pedalling and pedal assist as well, but the individual specification determines the features.
Does the throttle always arrive fitted?
It may be fitted, supplied separately or optional, depending on the version. Check what is included and how it functions before ordering.
