Mid-drive electric bike

Buying guide

Mid-drive electric bike for everyday journeys

A mid-drive electric bike has its motor at the crank and delivers assistance through the bike’s drivetrain. This selection contains models with a confirmed mid-drive motor. Compare the frame, gearing, battery and comfort as well as the motor to find a bike for your regular routes.

In short

  • A mid-drive motor sits at the crank.
  • Compare motor torque alongside the available gearing.
  • Motor placement alone does not determine range or bike weight.

Choosing a mid-drive electric bike

How a mid-drive motor works

The motor assists at the pedals, with power transferred through the chain or belt. Unlike a hub motor, it therefore works through the bicycle’s gearing. A low, central motor position affects weight distribution, but the frame, battery position and assistance control also influence how the bike feels.

Torque, gears and climbing

Compare torque in Nm, the range of gears and the way assistance responds. An appropriate gear helps both rider and motor on climbs. More torque does not automatically mean a higher top speed. Ease pressure when changing gear and follow the manufacturer’s drivetrain maintenance instructions.

Choosing the frame, battery and comfort

Calculate the distance between charges with a reserve, then compare battery capacity, bike weight and rider fit. Consider whether you need a folding frame, a low step-through or suspension. Mid-drive motors appear on different bike types; they do not guarantee a particular range or compliance with local road rules.

Frequently asked questions

How does a mid-drive differ from a hub motor?

A mid-drive sits at the crank and sends power through the drivetrain. A hub motor is located in the front or rear wheel and drives that wheel.

Is a mid-drive electric bike better for hills?

Using the bike’s gears can be useful on climbs. The result also depends on gearing, torque, total load and how you pedal.

Do all mid-drive electric bikes have the same range?

No. Battery capacity, assistance level, surface, temperature and load all affect range. Compare the exact models and allow a reserve for your journey.
