Electric scooters and the environment: facts and what we do

Electric scooters and e-bikes are a growing phenomenon in cities around the world, and it's not hard to see why. These electric vehicles are comfortable and fun to ride and an alternative to cars and public transport for shorter trips. Here are some of the reasons why many people choose them.

Firstly, electric scooters and electric bicycles are fully electric, which means they produce no exhaust emissions while you ride. Their overall environmental impact also depends on manufacturing, the battery, the electricity you charge with and how long the vehicle is used.

Secondly, electric scooters and electric bicycles are easy to charge. The battery charges from an ordinary power socket – with electricity from sources such as solar or wind power if your electricity contract is based on them – and you never fill up with petrol or diesel. In addition, you can avoid congestion on public transport and do not have to look for a parking space.

Thirdly, electric scooters and electric bicycles are a cost-effective means of transport. Electric scooters are cheaper to buy and maintain than cars and usually pay no vehicle tax. Insurance, however, depends on where you ride: Germany, France, Spain and Italy require liability insurance for every electric scooter; Sweden requires it above 20 km/h, or above 14 km/h for scooters heavier than 25 kg.
